Charbono is a rare, old-world grape noted for its fresh acidity and brambly fruit character. The vines in Napa Valley were planted in the early 20th century, but very few remain today. The last of California’s Charbono survives in a handful of parcels, tucked away on older vineyards. This 2017 vintage shows notes of blackberry, raspberry, mocha, and coffee. It’s a distinctive wine and pairs well with beef or a red-sauce pasta.

Soil-to-Sip
- The fruit is from a dry-farmed, 1.5-acre block of 40+ year-old head-trained vines near Calistoga, California.
- Grapes were hand-harvested, sorted, and de-stemmed, with 15% whole clusters included to encourage native fermentation and lift aromatics.
- Fermented in open-top vessels, then aged for 10 months in 30% once-used and 70% neutral French oak.
- Bottled lightly filtered and unfined, which reveals a dark, purple-black wine with soft tannins, vivid wild blackberry, mocha and espresso bean.
